BJA was founded in Los Angeles by Bettye Jollivette in 1979, as a real estate brokerage, development consulting and project management firm. However, the organization’s reputation stemmed from the 1974 appointment by the Governor of Bettye Jollivette as the Deputy Real Estate Commissioner for the State of California, Department of Real Estate – Subdivisions.
